TOPIC MEETING:

High Performance Natural Building for Cold Climates 2012 Series

Monday, May 7, 2012-7pm -9pm- On the Rise Bakery - Richmond, VT.

In response to contemporary social and ecological issues, the sustainable building community continues to improve the efficiency and performance of new buildings, while simultaneously seeking to bring older structures up to higher standards.  However, reliance upon industrialized processes and petro-chemical materials keeps these initiatives from obtaining goals of deep sustainability.  Using natural building techniques to reach high-mark performance goals can address these some of these cradle-to-grave and social accessibility problems found with more conventional materials.

Having recently conducted field testing on seven natural building projects throughout Vermont and New York as part of a research project in support of a forthcoming book to be released in spring 2012, Jacob Deva Racusin and Ace McArleton of New Frameworks Natural Building will present findings from their study.  Their testing included a combination of blower-door testing, infrared camera scanning, and both surface and probe moisture testing, to develop a clear understanding of the efficacy of current design detailing practices, the most common sources of heat loss in straw bale construction, and the viability of moisture control in these assemblies.  Basic information on natural building techniques and building science will lend context to a presentation on the latest information available on what is happening inside our walls and roofs.

Bio:
Ace McArleton is co-owner of New Frameworks Natural Building, LLC, based in Central Vermont. Ace has led workshops and taught classes locally and nationally on natural building, and also on issues of gender and sexuality and access to the building trades, with both youth and adults.
Ace is a member of Natural Builders NorthEast and the Timber Framers Guild.  He is currently working on a forthcoming book/DVD project on natural building to be published in the spring of 2012.

Jacob Deva Racusin has been creating functional art with wood, stone, straw, earth, and other assorted materials since 2000.  Through contracting, consultation, teaching, and lots of tinkering as co-owner of New Frameworks Natural Building, he explores particular interests in cold-climate straw bale construction, natural painting and plastering, bio-regional design and construction, and the integration between buildings and their environments.  He is currently working on a forthcoming book/DVD project on natural building to be published in the spring of 2012.
