Domestic Solar Hot Water Workshop Series 2009

Building for Social Responsibility (BSR) will present the 2009 workshop series on domestic solar hot water.  This day long workshop will cover in detail, site assesment for solar potential, designing the syste, types of solar panels available, other components of the system and the nuts and bolts of the actual installation.  We will also cover state and federal incentives that are available for domestic domestic solar hot water systems. These workshops will be offered throughout the state later this year.  BSR is also applying for accredidation through Renewable Energy Vermont (REV) for these workshops.  Dates and more detailed information about these workshops will be availbale soon.

 

 

Topical Meetings

BSR Recognizes that our most valuable resource in bringing about positive social and environmental change in Vermont is our people. We are now coordinating our Topical Meetings in conjunction with the Vermont Green Building Network's "Green Calendar Series," drawing on a wealth of local knowledge for presentations and discussions on the latest developments in green building technology and practice.

Deep Energy Retrofit – Open House – Montpelier, Vermont June 29, 2009

What: An exciting firsthand look at a deep energy retrofit of a 1880's home.

When: Monday June 29, 2009 7:00 p.m.


Where: The Memorial Room at City Hall, 39 Main Street, Montpelier, VT followed by a tour of the home - within easy walking distance

Details:  John Snell, of the Snell Group, considered by many to be one of the world’s leading experts in infrared thermography, recently turned the IR camera – and the cellulose blower – on his own house in Montpelier in a personal attempt at a deep energy retrofit.

At BSR’s next topic meeting, Mr. Snell will offer a presentation held at City Hall followed by a tour of his home.   He and his builder, Dan Clar, Inc. of Montpelier, will be sharing their hands-on experience bringing a marginally built 1880s house up to 21st century standards of energy performance.

Mr. Snell and his builder made significant thermal improvements to the basement, walls, and roof of the house, installed new high performance windows, added a whole house HRV system, and reconfigured the heat distribution to provide greater efficiency and flexibility.

“For 25 years I've taught others to find defects in buildings; with this project I had a firsthand experience of seeing where many of those defects begin!” Mr. Snell has observed.  “It has been humbling!” he added.
